Dolphin Spotting in Tenerife

The sparkling blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean which surround the island of Tenerife are home to a variety of marine life, making this a fantastic location to go on the lookout for dolphins. There are many boat trips on offer across the whole island, which will take you to the places dolphins are known to frequent. One of the best destinations to see dolphins is the waters of Los Gigantes which is located on the western side of the island. There are a variety of different boats here, providing trips that usually last between 2-3 hours. I took a three hour trip from here and wasn’t disappointed.

As soon as we had boarded the boat we sailed for about an hour before stopping in what promised to be a good spot. After waiting a while we realised we had been unfortunate- there had been no sightings of any marine mammals. But the boat crew were still determined and after moving to a second spot our luck was in! It wasn’t long before the tell-tale sign of a fin broke the water and soon a small group of bottlenose dolphins appeared by the boat. It was mesmerising watching these playful creatures indulge in what seems to be a popular pastime, racing alongside the front of the boat and leaping out of the water, an amazing acrobatics show at sea. It wasn’t hard to see how they have earned their reputation for being one of the most charismatic mammals. And of course when the dolphins were bored of us they were free to turn around and head back to the waves.

Before heading back to shore, there was just time for a refreshing dip in the waters of a small bay, so don’t forget to pack your swim stuff! Binoculars are also handy in helping you catch a glimpse of these amazing cetaceans. A camera with a powerful lens or ability to zoom in well is also useful in capturing memories of your trip.

Reliable Operators

It is very important that you choose a reliable operator, one who considers the welfare of the animals, not just making money. Researching reputable companies who remain at a reasonable distance from the creatures, whilst minimising noise means that both you and the dolphins have a guaranteed good time and what an incredible experience to be able to witness wild animals living in their natural habitat.
